National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) is committed to minimising fuel and power consumption to save fuel costs and the environment. NHSRCL is implementing non-conventional energy projects to meet the electricity requirement. Solar power plants will be set up in Thane and Sabarmati depots of the bullet train and if this work is completed, solar energy will be used for electric lights, fans and other small appliances in the depot and other areas of the bullet train.

Three large rolling stock depots will be set up for the 508 km bullet train project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. The depot will be designed on the lines of the Shinkansen depot in Japan. One of the three rolling stock depots will be set up at Thane, while the remaining two will be set up at Sabarmati and Surat in Gujarat.

Bullet train maintenance work will be done there. The Thane depot will be built on a plot of around 55 hectares. Initially, four inspection lanes and 10 sub-lanes (stabbing) will be constructed.

In future they will be increased to 8 and 31 respectively. The largest rolling stock depot will be set up at Sabarmati and will be set up on an area of about 83 hectares. There will be a washing plant, workshop, shed. 10 sub-routes are planned in this depot and 29 sub-routes will be increased in future. There are plans to set up solar power plants in both these depots. Depot sheds and buildings will be designed accordingly. The Sabarmati depot alone will have a solar power generation capacity of about 14 MW. A senior official of the National High Speed Rail Corporation (NHSRCL) informed that planning is being done regarding the capacity of solar power generation in the Thane depot.

A rolling stock depot will be set up in Surat on an area of 40 hectares. It will be set up at a distance of about 2 km from Surat station. Two sub-routes are planned and their number will be increased to four in future. However, Surat depot is smaller compared to other depots and currently there is no plan for generating solar energy here, said a senior official of NHSRCL.

Although there is no water shortage in Thane at present, there is in Sabarmati, Surat. However, water resources management will be done in all the three depots. The wastewater will be treated and reused. Also, about 70 percent of the water requirement will be met from recycled water. Along with this, waste management will be done at each depot, said a senior official of NHSRCL.
