On  Wednesday night, an under-construction foot over bridge (FOB) collapsed in Mankhurd. According to reports, two people have suffered injuries but luckily, there was no loss of life. The incident took place at Bainganwadi junction near Ghatkopar-Mankhurd Link Road.

"Two persons, who were standing near the under-construction FOB, sustained injuries in the incident. They were rushed to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital in Ghatkopar," an official said.

Meanwhile, a truck along with two cars that were parked under the bridge were completely smashed. Upon receiving information about the incident, police officers from Makhurd Police Station rushed to the spot. After they arranged for admission of the injured to the hospital, they initiated a primary investigation.

Currently, civic officials are clearing the debris from the site. The fallen part of the bridge has been removed from the truck via a cutter and a crane has also been deployed.

Coming back to the people that had sustained injuries due to the bridge collapse, one of the two injured has been discharged after primary treatment. The other person is still admitted in the hopital and recieveing appropriate treatment at the hospital.

Of the 344 bridges under BMC - including transport and pedestrian, a structural audit was carried out for 304 bridges while 29 of these bridges were detected to be in extremely dangerous condition. After which, BMC decided to deconstruct nine high-structured bridges.

Accidents like these do raise questions about the lack of awareness amongst the officials to ensure public safety.
