Lockdown in Maharashtra's Amravati extended till March 8

The Uddhav Thackeray government is contemplating imposing a night curfew to curb the virus, said state Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar on Friday. He also added that the decision would be soon taken in this regards.

As the coronavirus cases continue to rise across Maharashtra, Amravati District Collector on Saturday, February 27, extended the lockdown in Amravati and Achalpur till March 8.

Also, the lockdown has been extended in Yavatmal, Akola, Akot and Murtijapur owing to the increasing number of cases. Meanwhile, Anjangaon Surji village has been declared a containment zone.

Officials, however, said that the situation will be reviewed by March 5 or 6 to check the progress.

On February 21, the Maharashtra government had announced a week-long complete lockdown in the Amravati district and Achalpur city in wake of a spurt in COVID-19 cases. Only the essential services are permitted to operate. All concessions given under the 'Mission Begin Again' stand cancelled till 8 am of March 1.

The state administration has been acting on high alert amid rising COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra.

On Friday, February 26, Maharashtra recorded 8,333 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus. This propelled the state's COVID-19 tally to 21,38,154. Currently, there are 67,608 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, Mumbai recorded more than 1,000 cases for the third consecutive day.
