In a welcoming news for Mumbaikars, the south-bound arm of the Mumbai coastal road project will remain open for 16 hours. Additionally, it will be open for motorists on weekend also, making it available for all seven days a week.

As per the changes, timings have been extended from 7 am to 11 pm seven days a week. Earlier, the traffic timing from the two junctions in Worli was only from 8 am to 8 pm.

BMC’s this move is to ascertain the efficiency of the coastal road. Moreover, the other arm, scheduled for a launch this month, will also be opened for 16 hours on all the days.

This time extension is only for two interchanges, which include entry point of Rajni Patel Chowk, popularly known as Lotus Junction; entry and exit at Amarsons Garden entry and exit and exit at Marine Drive (Princess Street). However, traffic will be allowed only from 8 am to 5 pm from Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli.

An official stated that this will be on a trial basis. During this time, they will see if the situation is smooth as per their expectations and then the timing will be made permanent.

Once both the bonds start functioning, by June, the challenge will arrive when it comes to the ventilation system. But before that, if one tunnel sustains a 16-hour-period, that will be good for starters, official added.

The contractors had requested to extend the travel time as the traffic congestion problem may arise. Because, the major mechanical installation work of the northbound tunnel is going on at an advanced stage and to carry out real time testing and adequacy of various systems.

A speed limit has been fixed for travel on the coastal road. The speed limit for a vehicle is 80 kmph on a straight road, 60 kmph on a tunnel and 40 kmph on a curved road.
