The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) will soon commence the trial run for the second phase of Mumbai's first underground metro. Major works of overhead electrification (OHE) and track-laying have been completed up to Dadar station.

Integrated trials of Metro 3 between Aarey and BKC have been underway since the end of last year. In the first phase, all necessary permissions to start metro services are expected to be received by the end of May.

According to an MMRC official, the trial run process between Aarey and BKC has reached its final stage. At present, the work of checking the train and route by putting heavy weights in the train is going on. At this time, the metro is running at a speed of 95 km per hour and all its equipment is being checked.

Along with metro running, signaling system, telecommunication, platform screen doors and testing of tracks are also going on. The process of third party inspection of metro line will be done soon. After this the Metro Rail Safety Board will be invited for the final test.

In the first phase, the service will be started with 9 trains. Inspection work of all 9 trains has been completed.

Tunneling and track laying along the route is almost complete. Installation of equipment is in progress along the entire route. Almost 95 per cent of the entire metro line has been completed.

MMRC plans to introduce services on the entire metro line in three phases. Metro service will run from Aarey to BKC in the first phase (8 stations), extending it to Worli in the second phase (6 stations) and reaching Cuffe Parade in the third phase.

There will be 11 stations between Worli and Cuffe Parade in the second phase. It is scheduled to be operational by October this year.

Phase 1 of Metro services are likely to start by June-July. Service on the entire route is expected to begin in late 2024 or early 2025.
