Mumbai: 1,380 offenders pay over INR 3 lakhs penalty for littering, spitting

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s clean up marshals have collected a fine of INR 3.34 lakh from such violators.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) delegated clean-up marshals have fined 1,380 offenders and collected a fine of INR 3.34 lakh for soiling public places within three weeks. 

The civic authorities stated that the most common penalty imposed is INR 200 for littering and spitting in public spaces.

Currently, clean up marshals are active in only these five wards. Of these, most of them were penalised from A ward, which covers Marine Drive, Nariman Point, Churchgate and Colaba areas, reveals the BMC data.

Ward-wise offenders:

Ward A - 917

Ward C (Kalbadevi, Pydhonie) - 94

Ward G/South (Worli, Parel) - 302

Ward E (Byculla) - 54 

Ward K/East (Jogeshwari, Andheri, Vile Parle) - 13

As per Solid Waste Management (SWM) rules of the BMC, the other provisions of penalty include INR 1,000 for washing vehicles on roads, INR 500 for littering by pets and INR 100 for burning garbage in the open. Besides this, the BMC can impose a fine upto INR 1,000 if a person is found defecating in public.
