The sudden rise in the cases in Maharashtra has become a cause of concern. The state reported 5,427 new coronavirus cases, 2,543 discharges, and 38 deaths in the last 24 hours, as per State Health Department on Thursday, February 18. With this new addition, the total cases in the state are 20,81,520

Total recoveries are 19,87,804. The active cases are 40,858, while the death toll is at 51,669 in the state.

Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Maharashtra were the worst-affected areas of the country since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in February-March 2020.

Hence, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation issued fresh guidelines in Mumbai amid rising cases of COVID-19. According to this, if five or more COVID patients are found in a building, it will be sealed, the BMC Commissioner IS Chahal said on February 18. There are talks of fresh restrictions in Mumbai and even a lockdown cannot be ruled out. The Mumbai Local Trains had recently started ferrying the general public during off-peak hours. At this time, there is no word, if there will be restrictions imposed regarding the same.

There has also been a lockdown announced for the weekend in Maharashtra’s Amravati district. The announcement was made on February 18 and at the same time, Yavatmal district has also tightened its COVID-19 restrictions.

On February 16, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray directed senior officials to take strict action against people or organisations who flout COVID-19 guidelines.

Meanwhile, India reported 13,193 new cases, 10,896 recoveries and 97 deaths in the last 24 hours. On Thursday, February 18, the total tally for India stood at 1,09,63,394. According to the data by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in total 1,06,56,845 have completely recovered. The death toll is at 1,06,67,741 in the country. At present, there are 1,39,542 active cases. According to the ICMR, 20,97,03,791 samples have been tested up to February 17. So far, 1,01,88,007 people have been vaccinated in the country.
