The Maharashtra State Nurses Association (MSNA) goes on a two-day strike starting today, May 26. With this, services at government-run hospitals and medical colleges will get hampered.

The development came soon after the association had a meeting with the state health minister Rajesh Tope and the Directorate of Medical Research and Education (DMER) failed on Wednesday, May 25.

According to reports, the nursing associations have opposed the government’s decision to outsource the hiring of 1,749 nurses of the total 4,500 vacant posts across the state. Additionally, the nurses have demanded ‘request-based transfers’ instead of regular, mandatory transfers.

Moreover, the association, which has 25,000 members, has stated that they will not participate in emergency services too, and if the demands are not met, they plan to go on an indefinite strike from Saturday, May 28. MSNA said that they oppose the privatisation of nursing in government hospitals and have been demonstrating for the past two days, but there is no response.

These statements were in a reaction to unsatisfying response from DMER and minister Tope as they only assured to look into the demands after an unofficial meeting.

Besides, it has also come to light that since Monday, May 23, the nurses have been boycotting work for an hour between 7.30 am to 8.30 am while hundreds have been agitating at Azad Maidan in Mumbai for the past 2 days.
