The number of patients with mucormycosis (black fungus) is increasing in the state and since treatment for the same is not affordable to the common man, the government has decided on fixed treatment rates for private hospitals.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, on Saturday, June 5, 2021, approved the decision posed by the health department in this regard. As per the revised guidelines, the cities have been categorized while fixing the rates and authorities have been told to not add any additional charges except the pre-decided the prices. Warnings have been issued regarding the same.

Earlier, the rates for treatment of coronavirus were also fixed by the state government, and a few days ago, State Health Minister Rajesh Tope announced the decision to provide free treatment to patients with mucormycosis infarction. This was being planned under the state government's Mahatma Jotiba Phule Janaarogya Yojana, basis which free treatment was being provided to these patients, at selected hospitals applicable in the Mahatma Phule Janaarogya and Pradhan Mantri Janaarogya Yojana.

However, officials have noted that many patients have been visiting private hospitals for the treatment, and have complained about excessive charges. State Health Minister Tope had submitted a proposal to control these rates in private hospitals and the same has now been approved by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. The new decision was applicable across the state from Friday, June 4 and will remain implemented until July 31, 2021.
