After their alliance in Maharashtra broke down over power-sharing tussle, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena will not contest the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) together.

Maharashtra BJP on Sunday announced that they will go solo in the 2022 BMC elections. The Sena has a stronghold in BMC since the last 30 years.

This happened after Sena broke its 30-year-old alliance with the BJP after their post-assembly election brawl in Maharashtra over power-sharing.

On November 22, Shiv Sena candidate Kishori Pednekar was elected unopposed as Mumbai Mayor. After Shiv Sena worked out and alliance with Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra, the latter didn’t field their candidates for the Mayor elections.

Even BJP backed out and didn’t field its candidate against Shiv Sena’s Kishori Pednekar. However, BJP had hinted that they will contest the 2022 BMC elections alone.

While making the announcement official, Patil informed that BJP will have its own Mayor when it comes to power. In 2017 BMC elections, BJP won 82 seats while Shiv Sena won 86 seats.
