Govt provides INR 10 lakhs each to kin of those who lost lives in Maratha quota stir

The government believes that this decision will bring some relief to the relatives of the deceased who were pressing for the rights of Maratha community, which includes restoration of the 12 per cent quota in education and the 13 per cent quota in jobs.

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday, November 30, announced that they will provide INR 10 lakhs each to the kin of the people who died in the agitation for Maratha reservation.

The government has released the aid from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. 

The 34 families receiving financial assistance from the government include 6 from Aurangabad district, 3 from Jalna, 11 from Beed, 2 from Osmanabad, 2 from Nanded, 4 from Latur, 3 from Pune and one each from Ahmednagar, Solapur and Parbhani districts.

Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan, who heads the cabinet subcommittee on Maratha reservation, said that the Maha Vikas Aghadi government has fulfilled its promise to provide INR 10 lakhs each to the kin of those who died in the agitation.

The BJP-led government had announced during its tenure from 2014 to 2019 that 15 families had been given INR 5 lakhs each, instead of INR 10 lakhs each.

The state government had transferred the amount of INR 2.65 crores to the concerned district collectors to give to the 34 bereaved families.

The government believes that this decision will bring some relief to the relatives of the deceased who were pressing for the rights of Maratha community, which includes restoration of the 12 per cent quota in education and the 13 per cent quota in jobs that was cancelled by the Supreme Court.
