The Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation Limited (MRVCL) has recently brought two additional foot-over bridges (FOBs) into service. These bridges are located in the Thane-Diva stretch and between GTB Nagar and Chunabhatti stations. They will prevent rail track trespassing and improve east-west connectivity in the Central Railway’s suburban segment.

The FOB situated in the Thane-Diva area is 59 metres in length and 4 metres in width. The construction of this bridge cost around INR 3 crore. It began on August 24, 2023, and was completed on March 31.

Another FOB, costing INR1.5 crore, connects the GTB Nagar and Chunabhatti stations. This bridge is 30 metres long and 4 metres wide. The construction of this bridge started on October 5, 2023, and was also completed on March 31.

In 2019, MRVC released a 40-page paper titled “Preparatory Social Management Activities for MUTP-III Projects." This document focused on infrastructure projects in suburban areas of Mumbai. It aimed to improve commuter safety by controlling trespass.

The document suggested the construction of thirty anti-trespass structures, including FOBs, for the Central Railway and seven for the Western Railway. MRVCL has been making efforts to improve infrastructure and commuter safety in Mumbai’s suburban railway network.

On December 11, it was announced that the Central Railway (CR) had received INR 5 crore from the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) to finish the construction of two foot-over bridges at the Kalyan and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) at the Thane railway station. The construction of these bridges had been put on hold due to financial constraints.

Thane Station sees 7-8 lakh commuters daily, with the majority of them entering during rush hour. The area is often packed during these times. On November 13, 2019, Sanjeev Jaiswal, the former municipal commissioner of Thane, granted funds totaling INR 24 crore for two FOBs in Thane and one in Mumbra.
