2018 FIFA World Cup Russia: Sales increase as football fever takes over e-commerce platforms

The FIFA World Cup is in its 21st edition this year and has taken football fans by a storm. Along with the rest of the world, the football tournament has also engaged Indians in the ultimate event of football. Indians are known for their fandom and with the ongoing FIFA World Cup, the supporters have been seen in the jerseys of their favourite teams as a symbol of support.

The sale of football gear including team jerseys has seen a steady growth on several e-commerce platforms in India for the last two weeks. Argentina, Portugal and Brazil have emerged as favourites with the fans demanding the jerseys of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr.

According to Myntra VP and Head (Sports, Footwear and Accessories) Puspen Maity, the demand of football-related products has risen which consists of footballs, jerseys, shorts and tracks. He added that the World Cup has boosted the sports business by 40 per cent over April-June.

Another e-commerce platform, ShopClues claimed to have seen an average sale of around 4,000 footballs in the last 16 days.

Amazon said that they have also witnessed the same trend however, the buyers are not limited to buying the team jerseys but also training equipment and several other collectibles. Amazon also has upgraded its Alexa-powered ‘Echo’ smart speakers to provide interesting trivia along with the match updates.
