The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to restore 11 lakes in the P/North ward. This area includes Malad, Manori, and Madh. The project will improve water quality and beautify the surroundings.
The project is still in the early stages. On Saturday, April 19, Union Minister and Mumbai (North) MP Piyush Goyal announced the plan. He said the lakes will be upgraded and the water quality will be improved. This will help the people living nearby.
There are many lakes in the P/North ward. Some of the lakes included in the project are Gaondevi Talav, Bhujale Talav in Ram Nagar, Ali Talav, Harbadevi Talav, Vanila Talav, and Bhati Talav.
Many of these lakes are dirty and polluted. Their water has a high Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD). This means the water is not clean. There is a lot of garbage and poor hygiene. This harms the plants and animals in the lakes.
The plan is to clean, desilt, and beautify the lakes and their surroundings. Right now, only Lotus Talao in Malwani is under BMC control. The other 18 lakes are managed by the Mumbai suburban collector.
In 2022, the BMC wrote to the suburban collector. They asked for 16 of the lakes to be handed over. But the lakes have not yet been transferred.
As per sources, officials will start surveying the 11 lakes once they get control. Every lake has different problems. So, they cannot use the same plan for all lakes. The officials will make a separate plan for each one after the survey.
The project will be done in phases. The most difficult parts will be done first. As per reports, the work will be funded using CSR funds.
