Confusion and crowding broke out at Badlapur station on Monday, April 21, after the Central Railway (CR) shut down platform 1 for construction work. This was done to reduce congestion but it has caused more problems on platform 2 instead.
The work was carried out on Saturday night during a six-hour block. Metal fences were put up on platforms 1 and 1A, which were earlier used as an island platform. Until now, commuters used this space to board and exit trains heading toward Karjat.
Passengers could use both sides to enter and exit. Now, movement is restricted. Many commuters, especially those heading to CSMT, are struggling to board their trains.
As per sources, the train extended beyond the platform. This led to chaos. Women were pushed, and many people could not get off the train. Passenger numbers have also been rising in the Kalyan area.
Several angry commuters said railway officials should have been present to see the situation. They said the old system allowed Karjat-bound passengers to travel comfortably to Badlapur. The new setup removed that convenience.
However, the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation and Central Railway defended the decision. They said the barricades are part of the station’s expansion project. An MRVC official said the step was important for future development.
As per reports, officials have claimed that the public had already been informed. They explained that space was needed for a foot overbridge and escalator. These additions will help reduce crowding later.
