The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) is starting a green makeover of the Atkoli garbage site in Bhiwandi. The site is 34 hectares large. It was once used for small mineral digging. Now it will be turned into a proper waste management facility.

The Maharashtra government has handed over the land to TMC. It has also approved INR 50 crore for the first phase.

The waste will be laid down in layers. Each layer will be covered with soil. Odour control and germ-killing sprays will be used on top. After the base layers are ready, trees will be planted.

The new site will have following features:

1. There will be internal roads, security cabins, toilets, and a strong boundary wall.

2. A 2.5-metre strip along the border will have bamboo plants.

3. Ten acres will be kept for growing grass. Twelve acres will be used to sort garbage.

4. TMC’s Public Works Department will build a 150-metre road to reach the site.

5. A 250-metre sewer line will also be laid. Toilets and office areas will also be built.

6. Power supply and other safety steps will be arranged so that nearby people are not disturbed.

7. During the rainy season, green spots will be created across the land. Green belts will also be made near the offices and the entry gate.

As per reports, the commissioner has given deadlines for land levelling, wall work, and forest planting. The Solid Waste Management Department has been told to keep checking for problems. This includes managing odour and smooth daily working.
