The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seized stocks of edible oil worth INR 1.60 crores in a raid at several places in Palghar and Mumbai. Besides, action has been taken against four edible oil retailers and wholesalers, while samples of 40 edible oils were taken for analysis.
The raids were aimed at uplifting the standard of food business in the state as well as guiding food traders to comply with the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act.
In this raid, the action was taken against these four edible oil producers and retailers, M/s. Oil Well Oil Center, Govandi, GK Oil Center, Govandi, Omkar Trading Company, Vasai, in Palghar district and Trading Company, Vasai East.
Out of the total 40 samples collected, 28 samples have been certified by authorities and would be released for sale, whereas stringent action would be taken against those non-certified oils.
All six samples of peanut oil and two sunflower oil were found to be of low quality. Meanwhile, out of the total of 11 samples of mustard oil, three samples were found to be poor quality.
All Soybean, cottonseed and rice bran oils were found to be certified, whereas out of 13 samples of palm oil, 1 sample was found to be substandard.
This raid was conducted under the guidance of Shashikant Kekare, Joint Commissioner (Food), Brihanmumbai Division, Food and Drug Administration.
The Food Safety Commissioner has appealed to the citizens to lodge a complaint with the administration on toll-free number 1800222365 if they have any queries regarding the quality of food or medicine.
