As Ganesh Chaturthi marches towards its end, gradually people are submerging the Lord Ganesha idols. However, on Wednesday, as the festival entered the seventh day, thousands of dead fish and turtles were found on Mumbai beaches after they were washed ashore.

Every year, the marine life is affected adversely due to the festive celebrations and this scenario particularly emerges every time as Ganesh Chaturthi comes to an end. While the celebrations are not wrong but the damage to the marine life to such an extent raises a question or two about the way of celebration.

Activists and volunteers who clean the beaches every weekend were taken aback after they witnessed thousands of dead fish and turtles lying on the Juhu and Dadar beaches. According to the experts, the Plaster of Paris, lead paints and flower offerings immersed in the sea have caused harm to marine life.

The citizens’ efforts to clean up the beaches have been successful since the last year, but the festival ruins all their efforts due to the reckless celebrations. On the other hand, the damage to the marine life has also caused a lot of harm to the biodiversity.
