Mumbai International Airport (T2) station of Metro’s upcoming project, will have India’s tallest escalators. It will be a part of Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as underground Colaba-Bandra-Seepz Metro corridor.
At 19.15 metres, the escalators will surpass the current national record of 15.6m held by the ones at Delhi Metro's Janakpuri-West station. It will be equivalent to an eight-storey building. Meanwhile, the depth of CSMIA or T2 station is 26.5 metres. This also happens to be deepest station on the Aqua Line.
In total, 14 escalators will be installed at the station, out of which four have already been hoisted. Of which, eight escalators will be of the maximum height.
"A 250-ton crane is being used to lower the 8 escalators within confined spaces," said MMRC official.
The phase 1 of this project is nearing completion. It is also India's longest underground Metro project.
With this corridor, the officials aim to provide connectivity to the key financial area BKC and also interlink international and domestic terminals of the Mumbai airport.
In addition to this, MMRDA has also announced first-ever travelator in Mumbai to ferry people between monorail station at Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk and Mahalaxmi railway station and Metro 3 underground station. It will be 500m long approx and the cost of installing it will be around INR 6 crore.
