The Maharashtra government has made the decision to effectively use artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to solve crimes with the assistance of a new firm, the Maharashtra Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement (MARVEL), since it is becoming increasingly evident that AI is here to stay.
The purpose of MARVEL is to improve crime prediction and intelligence capabilities so that the state police force can use AI to combat law enforcement more successfully. Maharashtra is now the first state in the nation to establish an autonomous organisation for artificial intelligence in law enforcement.
In addition to assisting with instances involving missing women and children, MARVEL will also help with situations involving deadly accidents, stolen automobiles, and organised gang-related operations. In order to combat fraud instances, it will also help the cyber cell.
What Is MARVEL?
MARVEL is a joint venture between the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Nagpur and a special purpose company (SPV) that is entirely controlled by the Maharashtra government. On March 22 of this year, the Maharashtra government, IIM Nagpur, and Chennai-based Pinaca Technologies entered into a tripartite agreement, and the business was incorporated under The Companies Act, 2013.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that the administration is attempting to employ AI to detect crimes more effectively. They are developing various modules for crime detection support on the MARVEL platform. Any unit can submit a case to MARVEL for help with technology. The State Home Ministry will oversee the company.
For example, footage from regular CCTV cameras can be used to trace an automobile implicated in a crime. If the registration number is recorded, the footage can be submitted to MARVEL. The platform can use artificial intelligence (AI) to examine the data and identify and capture the suspect. This is a basic illustration. Numerous intricate applications, such as data mining, are possible.
Artificial Intelligence utilises vast amounts of data to train computer systems. In addition to being required for predictive analysis, this can also offer solutions for which a human being would be required, according to Harssh Poddar, the CEO of the SPV and the ex-officio director of the Nagpur Rural Police Bureau.
Poddar clarified that MARVEL will employ AI algorithms to analyse, visualise, and alert on critical organisations for organised crime that generates a lot of data, enabling the authorities to take appropriate action. By helping to make sense of the data, these AI algorithms will support the resolution of financial fraud and cybercrime cases.
MARVEL's technology partner is Pinaca Technologies. The business will develop AI algorithms, but Marvel will maintain copyright. There are currently ten generic products on the market, and the state will soon release guidelines for using them. With less human effort required, more data aspects can be analysed thanks to MARVEL's AI technologies, which can also support the cyber cell when needed.
