The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials have arrested a passenger who had arrived from Nairobi, a Senegal national, for allegedly smuggling cocaine worth over INR 26 crore.
Acting on the intelligence, the DRI officers intercepted the passenger on January 17 at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Mumbai.
The arrested accused has been identified as Thomas Mendy alias Joseph Iwuchukwu Okechukwu (40), currently residing in Lagos, Nigeria, as per FPJ report.
During the examination of the handbag in his possession revealed that drugs were ingeniously concealed between the outer and inner layers of the handbag on each side.
The tests conducted on the recovered substance, tested positive for presence of Cocaine a narcotic drug in each of the two packets.
The officials recovered cocaine weighing 2662 grams valued at INR 26.62 crore. Seizing operation was done under the provisions of NDPS Act,1985. The passenger was arrested by the authorities.
Further investigation is in progress, DRI sources said.
