After Bandra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is planning to install nets on small drains in Mumbai as well. The governing body is also thinking of imposing fines on people who dump garbage in drains. A senior civic official said that the proposal is currently under discussion.

The BMC removed 1,042 metric tonnes of debris and 139 metric tonnes of garbage during its cleanliness drive in the city between December 3 and 15. The campaign is undertaken every Saturday in one ward of each administrative zone.

During the operation, the team found thermocol, plastic bags, furniture, rubber, wrappers etc. in the drain which clogs the drains. For this reason, the civic body is taking different measures to avoid throwing waste in the drains.

The BMC has earlier taken several measures such as installing dustbins on drains, covering them with nets, creating awareness through campaigns and deputing clean-up marshals to monitor the drains. Clogging of drains due to plastic carry bags was a major cause of the 26/7 floods in 2005, in which more than a thousand people lost their lives.
