After the Gokhale Bridge at Andheri Railway Station collapsed, Bombay High Court on Wednesday issued a statement criticising the Civic Body and Railway Administration and expressed its displeasure.

Bombay HC has directed police to inquire as to why there are no structural audits of the bridge and reason for its collapse. “Why shouldn’t the corporator or the Ward officer be held responsible for the accident?” the court asked.

Slamming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Bombay HC said that this incident raises questions over the safety of Mumbaikars. While the BMC and Railways try to shake their accountability, the court has expressed its resentment over the same. The civic body shall take up its responsibility for this incident and not shy away from it, the HC said.

HC slammed the BMC and Railways while hearing a petition filed by Smita Dhruv regarding the stampede which happened last year on Elphinstone Railway Station bridge. Next hearing for this petition will be on July 12 and the HC has asked the state's solicitor-general and central government's chief advocates to be present.
