2,981 commuters died in 2018 with crossing railway tracks being the major reason

Almost 2,981 people lost their lives on the suburban railway tracks in the year 2018. According to the data given by Government Railway Police (GRP). The statistics also reveal that 3,349 people were injured. 

2,330 people either died crossing the railway tracks or fell from the running train - between January and August last year, 1,974 people died and 1,007 passengers died in the last four months of the year 2018. 522 people died on railway premises due to natural causes.

While trespassing on the railway tracks is one of the major reasons for these deaths, the death toll has also increased due to crowded trains. Due to trespassing, 218 people were killed near Kalyan station.
