The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is conducting core tests on all under-construction cement concrete (CC) roads in Mumbai. The goal is to make sure of the quality of the roads in the city. The first tests were conducted on Dikshit Marg in Vile Parle and Manjrekar Wadi Marg in Andheri (East) on Monday, July 1.
The test focuses on various factors like durability, load-carrying capacity, and material ratio. All these help in verifying the strength of the CC road. Materials used in the concrete are checked for homogeneity, quality, and overall durability.
In the core test, a section of the CC road was cut into a circle and sent to the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) laboratory. If the work does not meet the required standards, the contractor may be ordered to rework the project and improve the road quality.
In April and May, municipal officials held a session for its engineers at a workshop by IIT-B. The BMC launched a major road concretization project to get rid of potholes in Mumbai. Phase one will concrete 324 km of roads, and phase two will cover 312 km.
The civic body recently granted a work order worth INR 1,300 crore for the island city's roadways. The project, estimated at INR 6,000 crore, is led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. He promised to make Mumbai roads pothole-free when he took office in 2022.
