Manjula Shetye custodial death - Mumbai Crime Branch arrests one, detains five

The Mumbai crime branch has made the first arrest in Manjula Shetye’s custodial death on Saturday. They have arrested one of the jail staff and has detained five.

Shetye died on 23 June in Byculla’s jail. Her death created a furor as jail staff was held responsible for her death. Murder accused Indrani Mukerjea also alleged that Shetye was sexually assaulted by the jail staff before beating her to death.

The state women’s commission has ordered to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe Manjula Shetye’s death. This committee will comprise former judges, women police officers and another person who will conduct the investigation under the directives of the police commissioner. The report will be then submitted to CM Devendra Fadnavis.
