Mumbai Police had left no stones unturned to make sure that the New Year celebrations in the city are peaceful. They had already announced that over 40,000 cops will be deployed on roads and there also be 2,500 traffic police personnel on-road who will have ‘zero tolerance’ for drunk driving, speeding and rash driving.
To celebrate New Year a lot of people had gone to popular places in Bandra and places such as Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaum Chowpatty and Juhu Chowpatty. Despite the warning, 798 people were caught for drunken driving by Mumbai Police. Fortunately, there were no accidents or mishaps reported.
Out of these 798 offenders, 588 were driving two-wheelers and 210 were driving a car. Last year, 433 were booked for drunken driving on New Year's Eve.
News reports have pegged the celebrations to be subdued across the city and people preferred indoor celebrations than going out.
