The police have recently arrested Chhota Rajan's gang member who was wanted for 15 years. The accused, Chandrakant Anna Patil alias Charan Palkar (60) has been living in Belgaum after changing his name and hiding from the police for all these years. He has several criminal cases registered on his name.
In 1991, the residents of Vadrai village of Nalasopara, looted a ship lad with silver. The ship filled with silver belonged to Bhai Thakur and had sunk near the village. However, upon finding out about the loot, Bhai Thakur ordered his gang members to retrieve the silver from the villagers. In order to repossess the silver, the gang members committed several murders and burnt many people alive.
Amongst the murderers, Chandrakant Patil was one of the accused. He was arrested by the police and jailed but was released on bail in 1997. After which, he fled from Mumbai and started working with a gang in Delhi. He was caught by Delhi Police and handed over to Nalasopara Police but he once again fled and started working for Chhota Rajan.
After committing a murder for Chhota Rajan, Patil went underground and started living as an estate agent in a village situated at the Maharashtra-Karnataka border in Belgaum.
DCP Nisar Tamboli said that Patil had started visiting Nalasopara and Borivali frequently and the info reached the Crime Branch Unit 11 after which they made a plan to arrest Patil and were successful in taking him back to jail.
