Coronavirus Outbreak: Several districts including Mumbai earmarked as 'red zones'

Amid the increasing cases for the coronavirus or COVID-19 in Maharashtra, the state government has started to outlines its plan to extend the lockdown till April 30 in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Maharashtra on Monday crossed the 2,000-mark with 2,064 cases and the death toll in the state has reached 149. 

The Maharashtra government has designated Mumbai as a red zone. Along with this, the state government has also earmarked Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Palghar, Nagpur as red zones among other districts. 

The Maharashtra government has already divided the districts into three divisions - red, orange and green. The state government is looking to start industrial activities in parts of the state where not even a single COVID-19 case has been reported. 

The Uddhav Thackeray government may provide lockdown relaxation in eight COVID-19 free districts, the officials informed. However, the plan for lockdown extension and relaxation is yet to be finalised. 

On Monday, a state health official informed that at least 82 people were tested positive for COVID-19 in Maharashtra in 12 hours. Of the 82 fresh cases of COVID-19, 59 were reported from Mumbai while 12 from Malegaon tehsil in Nashik district. 

Along with this, five new cases were reported from Thane, three from Pune, two from Palghar and one from Vasai-Virar area. One of Asia’s biggest slum, Dharavi also reported four new COVID-19 cases taking the toll in the slum-dominated area to 47.

The Maharashtra government has set up containment zones in the cities like Mumbai to combat the spread of the coronavirus. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set up 381 containment zones in places with a high risk of infection. 

Earlier, the MVA government also deployed the State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) to control the crowd menace while announcing its decision to extend the lockdown at least till April 30.
