BMC to beautify all the bridges and flyovers in the city

All the bridges and flyovers in Mumbai will undergo a makeover by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with theme-based paintings, murals, and 3-D images on their girders and slabs parapet walls, and anti-crash barriers.

According to the media, a senior civic official of the bridges department has said that the themes of the artwork on bridges will be derived from the uniqueness of the location at which the bridge is situated.

Citing an example, he said that if the bridge is located near the heritage structure, they can paint something depicting the structure. Similarly, if it is close to a  business district, or a local market, they will design something that portrays them.

The BMC, through the bridges department or a committee set up for approval, will first approve the theme of each artwork. They will designate a contractor for the project. The contractor can then appoint an architect for the design and conceptualization of the artwork.

The officer further said that the contractor would have to make sure that the work should not hinder the safety and structural stability of the bridge. The existing traffic signages, signboards, blinkers, warnings, and signals must be conserved in their original place. As per the traffic police specifications, the signs should be evident, and the artwork "should not camouflage the safety signs."

Earlier, this month the engineer of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), Sanjay Desai, had told Hindustan Times that they are planning to beautify the flyovers in Navi Mumbai that have spaces that are not being used wisely.
