Mumbai’s Iconic British-Era Bridge Dismantled for a Major Railway Overhaul

In a significant move to modernize Mumbai’s rail infrastructure, the Western Railway (WR) is set to replace a British-era screw pile bridge located between Mahim and Bandra, spanning the Mithi River. Known as Bridge No. 20, this historic structure has been a crucial part of Mumbai’s railway network since the colonial era. However, years of wear and tear, coupled with the outdated technology of its iron screw piles, have necessitated an urgent upgrade to ensure safety and reliability.

The project, tentatively scheduled for the last week of January, will involve two weekend track blocks, each lasting 9.5 hours, to minimize disruption to commuters. Bridge No. 20 is the last remaining screw pile bridge in operation on the Indian Railways. Originally a marvel of engineering, its iron screw piles, which form the foundation, are now showing signs of significant deterioration and sinking in the riverbed. Western Railway officials have emphasized the critical nature of the project, citing the sinking south abutment as a key concern.

As part of the overhaul, the screw pile foundation of the south abutment, located towards Churchgate, will be replaced with a modern raft foundation. Temporary support will be provided by installing a relieving girder that extends beyond the current abutments. This will allow the south abutment to be safely dismantled and reconstructed. Once the new concrete abutment is complete, the original steel girder will be reinstalled. The project is expected to be completed within two months, with all major work scheduled to conclude before the monsoon season.

Additionally, WR plans to construct a temporary cofferdam in the Mithi River to facilitate work. The cofferdam, which creates a dry workspace, must be removed before the rains begin, in compliance with directives from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Officials have stressed the importance of completing the project on time to avoid waterlogging issues in the area during the monsoon.

Train services on the affected lines will be temporarily halted during the block periods, impacting both suburban and long-distance services. Details of train schedule changes will be shared closer to the dates. This project marks a vital step in modernizing Mumbai’s railway infrastructure, blending heritage preservation with a commitment to long-term safety and efficiency for millions of daily commuters.
