Navi Mumbai Villagers to Begin Hunger Strike Over NAINA Development

Residents of the villages in and around Navi Mumbai will soon increase their protests against Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA) city development plan. They plan to begin a hunger strike in front of the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra (CIDCO) office at the Belapur railway station on July 1.

As per reports, the villagers have protested against the scheme for two years. The plan affects their agricultural fields and their livelihoods. Protestors have asked for implementing Unified Development Control and Promotion Regulations (UDCPR), which might provide villages with incentives and maintain 60% of the land. It's a standard for providing package to individuals.

NAINA will be a planned city with modern amenities, spread over 225.59 square kilometers. It will include 94 villages around Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA). CIDCO is the special planning authority for NAINA.

Under the current plan, landowners will receive 40% of their developed land at a 2.5-floor space index (FSI). CIDCO will build playgrounds, roads, gardens, schools, and other services on the rest 60%. The NAINA project is being executed through twelve town planning schemes (TPS).

Gaothan Vistar Haq Samiti is an organisation with the cause of PAPs. Its president, Anil Dhavle, earlier went on a fast in December, ending it only after CIDCO promised a discussion with the Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The meeting is yet to take place.

Protestors argue that with the land given to CIDCO, the effective FSI reduces to 1, and they receive no financial compensation. They say that the compensation package is inferior to that given to PAPs at NMIA.

Villagers claim that the government would seize their land under the pretext of building public services without adequate compensation. They demand that the developed land be given to them at no additional cost.
