Panvel-Karjat Railway Corridor: 67% Work Done, Completion by December 2025

Nearly 67% of the work on the Panvel-Karjat Suburban Railway Corridor has been completed as of October 2024. This project is being managed by the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC). The MRVC plans to complete the project by December 2025. The goal is to create a modern double-line corridor between Panvel and Karjat.

The project is a key part of the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-III). It is expected to transform connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Land acquisition for the project has been completed. All 56.82 hectares of private land needed for the project have been acquired. The 4.4 hectares of government land have also been secured. Work in forested areas has begun after obtaining Stage I clearance. Stage II clearance is under process with the concerned authorities.

Significant progress has been made in engineering works. Two million cubic meters of earthwork have been completed. Over 3,100 meters of tunnels have been excavated. Lining work is ongoing for all three tunnels.

Six major bridges and 29 minor bridges out of a total of 47 have been completed. Four Road Over Bridges (ROBs) are finished. Major work at Mohape and Kirawali is advancing. The Pune Motorway underpass is complete, with finishing touches like painting already done.

Station infrastructure is also taking shape. Stations at Panvel, Chikhale, Mohape, Chowk, and Karjat are under construction. Work on platforms, foot over bridges, and administrative buildings is progressing steadily.

The corridor has a sanctioned cost of INR 2,782 crore. It is designed to reduce travel time and improve commuter convenience. Once completed, the Panvel-Karjat Suburban Railway Corridor will improve Mumbai’s suburban train network. It will also support the growing demand for rail services in the region.
