On the second day of the monsoon session of Maharashtra legislature, Shiv Sena leader Neelam Gorhe was unanimously re-elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the state legislative council. This happened amid huge chaos in the house as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) walked out.
The BJP on Monday had fielded Vijay alias Bhai Girkar to contest for the Deputy chairperson post after Maharashtra Legislative Council chairman Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar announced the polls.
However, the opposition party had moved to Bombay High Court against the election and Pravin Darekar - Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Council - raised objection against it saying that the election shouldn’t be held as the matter is scheduled to be heard on Thursday.
Nimbalkar said that he wasn’t apprised about the petition and stuck to the decision of holding election despite BJP’s objection. Darekar had said that those who have comorbidities and have tested COVID-19 positive are not allowed entry in the house.
Reacting to this, Nimbalkar said that the High Court never apprised him about the petition. High Court has no jurisdiction in the internal proceedings of the house, he added going ahead with the decision to conduct polls.
As this happened, the BJP legislators staged a walkout after which Gorhe was re-elected as the Deputy Chairperson of Maharashtra Legislative Council through voice vote.
This didn’t go well with BJP leaders as Chandrakant Patil wrote to Nimbalkar saying that he has never been fair to BJP in the last five years. Patil said that the appointment of Gorhe as the Deputy chairperson has violated all norms.
Meanwhile, Gorhe was also among those who have been appointed as Shiv Sena spokesperson while Sanjay Raut was named as the chief spokesperson.
