Amidst criticism for the Metro-3 car shed project, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) received the coaches for the prestigious Metro-2 and Metro-7 project. The coach arrived on September 3, Tuesday from Bengaluru and is currently kept at the MMRDA Ground at Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Meanwhile, MMRDA Commissioner R.A. Rajiv was present while the coaches were being kept at the ground.
The construction work of the Metro 2A (Dahisar to D.N. Nagar), Metro 2B (D.N. Nagar to Mandale), and the Metro 7 (Dahisar to Andheri) project is in its final stage and is currently, being conducted rapidly. More than 80 per cent of the construction work has been completed and therefore, the coaches are being assembled.
The Metro company had assigned the work to construct Metro coaches to a Bengaluru-based company called MBEML. MMRDA had initiated a ₹3015 crore contract with the company in November 2018. Accordingly, within 18 months of the contract, the first coach has arrived in Mumbai.
According to the contract, MMRDA has ordered 63 metro trains consisting of six coaches each. The first train is expected to be ready by July 2020. However, as a part of the extension of Metro route, an additional 21 metro trains have been ordered by MMRDA.
