Mumbai Toll Plazas To Ban Cash Payments from April 1

Maharashtra government will enforce cashless toll payments from April 1, 2025. Drivers must use FASTag or E-Tag at toll plazas under the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Cash and other payment methods will not be accepted.

It will be applicable at Mumbai’s five toll plazas: Vashi, Airoli, Dahisar, Mulund EEH, and LBS Marg Mulund/Thane.

The rule applies to key routes like the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, NH-48, and the Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link.

Other affected toll plazas include 23 on the Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, five under Nagpur’s IRDP, four under Solapur’s IRDP, three under Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’s IRDP, the Katol Bypass, and the Chimur-Warora-Vani route.

The decision follows policies from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and notifications from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). A government resolution dated mandates the switch to digital payments.

Non-compliance will lead to penalties. Drivers trying to pay with cash, smart cards, credit/debit cards, QR codes, or other methods will be charged double the toll amount. Vehicles without a valid FASTag will also face a fine equal to the toll.

Certain vehicles are exempt from tolls at Mumbai’s entry and exit points. These include light motor vehicles (LMVs), state buses, and school buses. Exempted locations are Dahisar, Anand Nagar (Eastern Express Highway), Mulund (LBS Road), Vashi, and Airoli.

Because of this exception, the toll operator will lose around INR 460 crore annually, INR 1.26 crore daily, and INR 37.8 crore monthly. The government will compensate MSRDC. A committee will be responsible for identifying the compensation.
