The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against illegal food vendors causing inconvenience on J Tata Road in Churchgate. These areas of food stalls are referred to as "khau galli." They are popular but have been operating without approval.
As per a report by FPJ, the situation is under evaluation by BMC. On Wednesday (December 25) and Thursday (December 26), BMC officials seized equipment belonging to illegal food stalls and hawkers in the area. This included gas cookers, temporary structures, and other items.
Despite these actions, several stalls resumed operations shortly after the seizure. As per reports, many vendors had returned by Thursday night. The civic body employees had been targeting them for two consecutive days. The confiscation of tools had forced many food kiosks to close.
Some vendors, despite losing their equipment and sheds, have continued their businesses. However, the walkway is still obstructed by tables and other items left behind by the closed stalls. Workers are now trying to retrieve their confiscated belongings from BMC officials.
Khau gallis are a defining part of Mumbai’s culinary culture. They are short lanes packed with food stalls offering dishes at reasonable rates. There are many khau galis in Mumbai, such as Ghatkopar Khau Gali, Carter Road Khau Gali, CSMT Khau Gali, etc.
