The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced that the beautification project for the Kala Ghoda precinct will be completed in 2025. The project will improve infrastructure and the area’s appearance.
Under the plan, roads are being covered with cobblestones, and walls are being decorated with murals. New lighting is also being installed to create an aesthetic ambiance.
Five lanes are the focus of the beautification plan. Work on VB Gandhi Marg, Rutherfield Street, and B Bharucha Road is already complete. Rope Walk Lane and Saibaba Road are nearing completion.
These streets are planned to get upgraded surfaces and improved pedestrian access. For this, roads are being excavated, backfilled, and topped with stone. The surface is being given a 100 mm thick leather finish.
An upgraded utility network is also being installed. Landscaping and electrical work are part of the development. The precinct will feature unique street lights to improve the ambience, especially during festivals. BMC aims to make the area more pedestrian-friendly.
In 2024, the civic body had stated that Kala Ghoda would be pedestrian-only on weekends. The restriction will apply from 5 pm to 12 am. This trial started last September.
The city authority now plans to extend this to other days after discussions with local residents. As per sources, BMC might ban vehicles permanently after the project is completed.
