In the month of July, 26 dogs at Nesco Exhibition Center in Goregaon died of starvation. In this regard, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has recently issued a notice to Nesco to provide a place to feed the dogs.
The death of 26 dogs at the Nesco Exhibition Centre in July sparked outrage among animal lovers. Because management staff and security guards at the exhibition centre stopped an animal lover from feeding nearly 40 dogs. The campus forest police had also registered a case against the staff for not allowing them to feed the dogs.
The case was pursued by the Pure Animal Lovers (PAL) Foundation. A legal notice was sent to Nesco Centre, BMC and Police through advocate Preeti Salaskar. The Nesco centre and the police failed to take any steps on the organisation's demand to direct the exhibition centre to designate a feeding spot. They eventually followed up with the BMC, which issued a notice to the exhibition centre.
On October 10, the Assistant General Manager of the Veterinary Health Department of the BMC issued a notice to the chairman of Nesco Park citing the PAL Foundation's complaint. The notice states that there is no law prohibiting the feeding of animals.
This notice outlines guidelines for management of feeding stray animals on the premises. Nesco officials have been directed to identify feeding sites for stray animals. “Meal times should be fixed. Feeding should be done with utmost hygiene,” it also states.
Roshan Pathak, Legal Advisor, PAL Foundation, said, “These are government regulations that say it is mandatory to provide feeding spots for animals in such premises. This rule applies whether the property is owned by a society, a government or a private company. If the animals live in the premises, no one can relocate them and it is their right to have a designated feeding spot.”
