In a major development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received 812 suggestions/objections by 3 pm on Monday, February 14, from the general public on the restructuring of electoral wards for the upcoming civic polls.

As per the schedule prepared by the State Election Commission (SEC), February 14, was the last day for submitting suggestions and objections.

It has come to light that more than 50 per cent of these objections, 454, were submitted on the last day, while 358 were received a day earlier on Sunday, February 13. However, most of the complaints were received at K East, M East, N and R South wards. K East ward comprising Andheri (East), Jogeshwari (East) and Vile Parle (East) received 85 complaints, M East ward comprising Govandi, Deonar received 84 complaints while N ward (Ghatkopar) received 79 and R South (Kandivali) received 76 complaints.

Interestingly, not a single suggestion and objection has come from the A ward i.e. Colaba and Fort area.

There were complaints about boundaries and about including/excluding particular areas, others have complained about descriptions of ward areas and boundaries. Whereas some citizens have complained about exceeding the norms about population. There are general complaints also, against dividing gardens into two wards, dividing community votes in two parts, etc.

After releasing a comprehensive map depicting the demarcation of 236 electoral wards in Mumbai on February 1, the civic authorities had invited suggestions and objections from the public.
