The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will reportedly conduct surprise inspections for hotels and restaurants across Mumbai. These inspections will make sure of compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
Mumbai is known for its grand New Year celebrations. On December 31, people are expected to gather in large numbers at restaurants, hotels, and bars to enjoy the festivities.
As per a report by FPJ, special teams have been appointed to cover different parts of the city. The FDA's inspections will focus on maintaining the quality and cleanliness of food during this busy time.
The inspections will reportedly cover key establishments in 13 zones across Mumbai. The goal is to ensure that residents are served safe and hygienic food. Strict action will be taken against businesses violating food safety norms.
Last year, similar inspections were conducted. Some well-known hotels were found with unclean kitchens and even rodent infestations. Many restaurants were operating without FDA food licenses. These violations led to heavy fines and temporary closures.
Earlier this year, the FDA conducted similar inspections during Diwali. The inspections focused on the fact that sweets, khoya, paneer, ghee, and dry fruits are safe and free from adulteration. It also warned manufacturers against reusing frying oil.
Meanwhile, a separate incident has been reported from a school in Palghar. A millet bar distributed to children was found to contain mould and fungus. Images of the contaminated bar have gone viral on social media. Laboratory tests on the samples are still pending.
The FDA has asked the public to report any complaints regarding food quality. Complaints can be made using the toll-free number 1800-222-365.
