The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently claimed that they have taken measures to prevent flooding in several areas in the western suburbs.
The civic body has undertaken extensive flood-mitigation measures at Goregaon Squatters Colony, Patkar Wadi in Malad (East), Santacruz, Cargo Nala, which is at Sahar, Andheri airport and Akurli Road in Kandivali (East).
The BMC also stated that it is still working on 31 waterlogging spots in western suburbs.
The BMC has already completed desilting work in Mumbai and suburbs. Now, the flood relief measures are being taken after considering the increase in population and residential areas in the suburbs, BMC official added.
The civic body has taken measures for the citizens living in the low-lying areas of the suburbs along with the Andheri subway.
In addition, cleaning and expansion of drains in the jurisdictions under the BMC is in progress.
The municipality has widened the 600 mm storm water drain at squatters colony to 1,500 mm. In Malad, the 600 mm storm drain from COD Gate to Kurar Manchubhai Road has been widened to 1,200 mm. All drainage lines in the area have been connected and a complete drainage line has been constructed at Malad. The municipality has claimed that this will bring great relief to the residents of Patkarwadi.
Santacruz, which connects the Swami-Vivekananda Road to the Link Road, is a low-lying area where traffic comes to a standstill during monsoons. The municipality has widened the box drain from 1.5 meters to 3 meters.
The 4-5 meter wide canal adjacent to Sahar Village and Andheri Cargo Area has been widened to six to eight meters. Therefore, the areas of Sahar Village, International Airport (Cargo Division), Sahar Police Station, Sutar Pakkhadi Police Station and Church Pakhadizon will not get flooded this year.
Akurli Road to Kandivali Station Road is also considered flood prone. The BMC has widened the storm water drain on Akurli Road, officials said.
