Guru Nanak Jayanti, which is also called Gurupurab is being celebrated on Monday (November 30). It is the birthday of Sikh guru, Guru Nanak Dev and is celebrated with a lot of fervour by the Sikh community. Most devotees visit gurudwara on this day. They also pay a visit to Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab to offer their prayers at the holy shrine. People from all over the globe visit Amritsar on this auspicious day to pray to the almighty.
According to the Hindu calendar, the festival is celebrated on a full moon day in the month Kartik. Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated as a public holiday in India.
Hundreds of devotees in Mumbai visit their nearest gurudwara on this auspicious day. Gurudwara Shri Dashmesh Darbar which is in Mumbai’s Sion area and also famous for Guru Nanak Jayanti celebrations, many devotees around Mumbai pay a visit to this place.
The celebrations usually commence at least two days in advance with the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book of the Sikh community. It is a 48-hour-long, non-stop reading of the book and is called the Akhand Path. It is accomapnied by Prabhat Pheris. These are early morning processions that begin at the Gurudwaras and proceed around the localities with people singing hymns.
The next day, a procession is organized which is headed by the five beloved ones or panj pyaras where they carry the Sikh flag and the Guru Granth Sahib in a palanquin. This part of the celebration is called Nagarkirtan
However, this year, amidst the pandemic, community leaders in Mumbai have asked the people to pray at home. Gurudwaras around the city have also decided to forgo the Langar
