In the wake of rising cases of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, the Maharashtra government has announced restrictions. These curbs include the imposition of a night curfew from 9 pm to 6 am.
During this, there will be a ban on any assembly of people in groups of more than five in public places. It will come into effect from midnight today, December 25.
There were reports of new SOPs being proclaimed on Friday, December 24, after state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray conducted a meeting with the officials.
This statement comes on the day when Maharashtra's Omicron count crossed 100-mark after 20 new cases were reported during the day. The capital city, Mumbai, reported 11 Omicron case today.
Moreover, this development also comes amidst the festivities, wherein certain guidelines were issued by the state government on Thursday, December 23. These entailed, that churches will be open to only 50 per cent of the total capacity and that there be a smaller number of singers in church choirs.
According to the circular released by the state government, the number of attendees should not be more than 100 for other social, political and religious events. While for open spaces, the number of attendees should not increase by over 250 or 25 per cent of the capacity of the space whichever is less.

Moreover, restaurants, gyms, spas, cinemas halls will have to operate at 50 percent capacity attendance. All of them will have to declare their full potential as well as 50 percent capacity, it added.
Earlier, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh govts have also imposed night curfews.
Apart from this, it is mandatory to avoid crowding at churches, near Christmas displays. Along with this, there is a prohibition to have stalls outside churches or burst firecrackers. The authorities have asked that one must refrain from organizing programs and rallies that will result in crowds.
