The state cabinet has decided to redevelop Kamathipura in south Mumbai on the lines of BDD chawl. According to this, flats of 500 square feet area will be given free of charge to 8,238 residents who currently reside on about 27 acres of land.

Kamathipura has about 943 cessable buildings of 100 years old and has 8,238 residents. There are a total of 349 non-cessable buildings, 14 religious places in this area. In addition, there are a total of 11 reconstructed buildings constructed by MHADA. Considering the narrow roads, and small dilapidated buildings in this area, the residents of this place had demanded that their area should be developed like BDD chawls and 500 square feet houses should be given like the residents of BDD chawls.

Taking note of this, the government has decided to jointly redevelop Kamathipura. The group redevelopment plan of Kamathipura has been approved in the cabinet meeting and MHADA has been given full powers as the planning authority to implement this project.

During the mass redevelopment of this area, the plot owners will be given land compensation as per the prevailing ready reckoner, 25 percent of the land value or 15 percent of the construction area from the saleable construction area, whichever is higher. If this goes as planned, Kamathipura, which has been somewhat infamously known as Golpitha, will get a new identity in the coming years.
