The Milk Producers' Association has opposed the relocation of cow-buffalo sheds outside Mumbai. If the sheds are shifted to Dapchari in Palghar, it will not be possible to deliver fresh milk to Mumbai on a daily basis. Therefore, the Milk Producers' Association has demanded that the sheds should be given space in the Aarey Colony itself, and about ten thousand animals from the suburban sheds should be accommodated in the Aarey Dairy Colony. In this matter, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) administration has now sent a letter to the state government's dairy business development department.
There are cow and buffalo sheds at various places in the suburbs of Mumbai. In 2005, the state government's Animal Husbandry Department decided to relocate these cowsheds outside Mumbai to Dapcheri in Palghar district. But the Bombay Milk Producers Association challenged this decision in the High Court. The High Court had ruled in favour of the state government's decision. The organisation then approached the Supreme Court. But even there the verdict was against the organisation. Therefore, the decision to move the sheds of the city was sealed. But even after three to four years of this verdict, sheds are still in Mumbai. Therefore, the animal husbandry department of the state government had sought help from the BMC.
Since the concerned department of the state government does not have enough mechanism to remove the cowsheds, the civic body demanded the removal of these cowsheds from the municipal administration. Accordingly, the BMC conducted a survey of the cow/buffalo sheds in Mumbai and sent notices to the same. There are 264 cowsheds in the eastern and western suburbs and there are about ten thousand animals in them.
After the BMC sent a notice to these stalls, the civic body called a meeting last month to listen to the Milk Producers Association. In this meeting, representatives of the Milk Producers Association presented their side. The place at Dapchari is not suitable for milk business, it is not affordable to bring and sell milk to Mumbai every day. Therefore, the organisation demanded that these cow sheds should be given a place in Aarey Colony itself. Therefore, the municipal administration has recently sent a letter to the dairy development department of the state government to consider the application for rehabilitating the sheds in Aarey dairy colony.
Most of the sheds are in Goregaon
There are a total of 23 sheds in Mumbai and most of the sheds are in Goregaon area. Following Goregaon, there are stables in Jogeshwari, Kandivali, Dahisar, Kurla, Vidyavihar area.
