The renovation of the Mumbadevi temple precinct in Mumbai is slated to start shortly. As per reports, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will lay the foundation stone of the project soon. The project has already received approvals from Deepak Kesarkar, the guardian minister, and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

The state government has held multiple meetings with the BMC to finalise the details. Bids have also been released. M/S Structwel has been hired as the project management consultant. The BMC has already completed a traffic simulation study. The development plan will also consider the local topography.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has planned an INR 146 crore development project to transform the 9,000-square-meter area around the temple, similar to Varanasi's Kashi Vishwanath Corridor. The precinct houses the Mumbadevi temple, dedicated to the city's presiding deity.

The project will be carried out in phases. One of the main factors of the renovation is the repair and restoration of the nearly 100-year-old Mumbadevi temple. The goal is to make the temple more accessible for devotees. The surrounding area will also be beautified with murals, statues, gardens, and water features.

The Mumbadevi temple is a small shrine located in the heart of the old city. Over time, residential and commercial buildings have crowded the area. This has led to congestion, especially during festivals like Navratri. Many times, devotees face long waits in narrow, crowded lanes while hawkers sell garlands and offerings right outside the temple.

The renovation will address these issues. In the new temple, up to 7,000 people will be able to gather at once. There will be new benches, drinking water, restrooms, first-aid stations, and parking for visitors. The temple entrance will be extended by thirty feet towards the Kalbadevi side.

Further, a garden with a mandal vaatika, a pond, and space for religious rituals like havans will also be built. There will be use of natural elements like basalt. Pydhonie Talav will also be rebuilt. The water body no longer exists. It will allow devotees to wash their feet.

The surrounding bazaar area will also be cleared. Stores and licensed vendors will be relocated to other locations along the path that devotees will take. The goal of the renovation is to organise the temple precinct, improve crowd control, and create a better experience for devotees.
