The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will soon launch an initiative to provide free, air-conditioned study rooms in containers to underprivileged students in slum areas. Following the success of free libraries in public parks, the project aims to create a comfortable and conducive learning environment.
The first of these study spaces will be set up in South Bombay (SoBo). For this project, tenders are now open. The study hall at Ganeshmurthy Nagar in Kulabya will have two containers with a capacity of 15 students each. Containers will be equipped with tables and chairs.
“Work on air-conditioning and other facilities is underway, tenders have been issued for the same. The project is expected to cost approximately Rs 50 lakh. We plan to start the study within the next month,” said an official.
Mumbai Guardian Minister Deepak Kesarkar said, “I have instructed the authorities to identify slums where these containers can be kept for needy students. Financial difficulties should not hinder their education. This activity will provide them with a comfortable environment for learning. The project will be funded by the District Planning Development Committee (DPDC).”
The BMC plans to set up the first 'Signal School' under the Santacruz Chembur Link Road (SCLR) flyover at Amar Mahal Junction. The school, built using 10 containers, is expected to cost over Rs 2 crore and will be funded by DPDC. It will seat around 60 to 100 students.
Sources have informed that the ground breaking ceremony of this project will be held soon. In May 2022, BMC inaugurated its first free library in Mumbai under Corporate Social Responsibility. At present there are 50 such libraries in the city.
