A 72-year-old woman lost her life in Mumbai after a 50-year-old peepal tree collapsed on Thursday evening, January 9. The tree belonged to the Kailash Niwas Cooperative Housing Society and fell near the Lavender Bough hotel on a 90 Feet Road in Ghatkopar East.
The accident happened at 6:01 pm. Meenakshi Shah, aged 72, and Vandana Shah, aged 56, were walking in the recreation ground owned by the Garodia Nagar Welfare Federation. The tree struck both women on the head.
Emergency services rushed the women to Rajawadi Hospital. Meenakshi Shah was declared dead upon arrival. Her body was sent for a postmortem. Vandana Shah suffered head injuries and was referred for an MRI scan.
According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the housing society had been warned to trim the tree in April 2024. Despite the warning, the society did not take action. As per reports, a tree officer confirmed that the society’s negligence led to the tree collapse.
The Ghatkopar police have been informed about the incident. A case is expected to be filed against the housing society for failing to comply with BMC orders.
In July 2024, two people died in different incidents of trees falling during the monsoon season. Authorities are now reportedly asking for compliance with safety measures to prevent such accidents.
