The Kalyan Government Railway Police recorded the highest number of fatalities in 2024. A total of 333 deaths occurred in this area. Kalyan also reported the most deaths due to falls from moving trains, with 116 cases. Thane GRP recorded the highest number of deaths due to track crossing, with 151 cases.
As per reports, improvements like air-conditioned trains, more foot overbridges, and escalators have made an impact. Measures such as fencing near platforms and removing ramps have also been implemented. The introduction of air-conditioned trains with closed doors has shown positive results.
The Central Railway had earlier announced steps to reduce accidents. These included installing whistle boards near accident-prone spots, building boundary walls, and removing encroachments. Western Railway also mentioned awareness campaigns to warn passengers about track crossing dangers.
Overcrowding is still a challenge. Trains leaving from major stations like Kalyan and Thane are often packed within minutes. This makes it difficult for passengers to board at later stations. As a result, falling from overcrowded trains is still common.
